1. Dress for Layers and Chilly Weather
Autumn in Finland brings vibrant colors and cooler temperatures. In September, it can still be mild, but by October and especially November, the weather turns damp, windy, and cold — sometimes dipping below freezing. Pack layers: thermal underlayers, long-sleeved shirts, a warm fleece or sweater, and a wind- and waterproof outer jacket. A hat and gloves will also come in handy, especially in the evenings.
2. Prepare for Rain and Muddy Trails
Rain becomes more frequent in the fall, and ground surfaces can get muddy. Waterproof footwear (like ankle-high hiking boots), a sturdy umbrella or raincoat, and quick-drying clothes are essential. If you plan to walk forest trails or rural paths, trekking poles and moisture-wicking socks make a surprising difference.
3. Pack Light for Light – and Darkness
By November, daylight hours are short – especially in the north. A small headlamp or flashlight can be useful for outdoor activities or walking to your accommodation in dim light. Don’t forget a thermos or insulated bottle for hot drinks — a true Finnish autumn comfort! With the right gear, you’ll enjoy cozy firesides, peaceful hikes, and maybe even your first glimpse of snow.
